DESCRIPTION
The project will help strengthen solid waste management (SWM) in the Greater Honiara Area (GHA), thereby increasing the livability, environmental sustainability, and climate and disaster resilience of the Solomon Islands' main urban center. Strengthened SWM supported through the project will (i) contribute to reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; (ii) improve environmental quality, circular economy, and ocean and public health; (iii) minimize flood risks; and (iv) support the livelihoods of women and low-income households living in informal settlements who depend on the circular economy. The project will (i) develop climate-resilient and sustainable solid waste infrastructure by constructing a new controlled landfill and rehabilitating the existing dump site; (ii) ensure the sustainability of SWM services by improving capacity for SWM service delivery and governance; and (iii) enhance waste reduction and the circular economy through improved recycling, community livelihood improvement, and awareness.
