   <narrative xml:lang="EN">SPVO &#x2013; Social Sustainable Coffee Value Chain from Ethiopia</narrative>
  </title>
  <description type="1">
   <narrative xml:lang="EN">The project proposal centers around the Social Sustainable Coffee Value Chain from Ethiopia. The current situation highlights the economic and social importance of coffee in Ethiopia, where it is a vital agricultural product, supporting millions of smallholder farmers. However, challenges persist, including fluctuating prices, limited market access, environmental degradation, child labour, and gender inequality, especially in remote regions such as the Kaffa and Sheka zones.Many smallholders and labourers face significant social risks, with low income, poor working conditions, and limited access to education and healthcare.The beneficiaries of the project include approximately 1,300 smallholder farming families and 490 farm workers, amounting to around 10,000 final beneficiaries, who are mostly residents of the Kaffa and Sheka zones.The project targets these coffee farmers and workers, focusing on improving their livelihoods through sustainable practices. This also includes temporary farm workers and casual labourers who rely on seasonal coffee harvesting jobs, along with community members who will benefit from improved social infrastructure.The envisioned impact of the project is multifaceted. It aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by increasing their income through sustainable farming practices and certification (such as Rainforest Alliance) to ensure better market access and fairer prices. ensuring transparency in the supply chain. The project will also foster closer relationships with producers, allowing for better monitoring of social practices through capacity building and advocacy and providing incentives for improved labour conditions addressing key social risks such as child labour and gender inequality, promoting social sustainability in the coffee value chain. Additionally, the initiative aims to promote education development, women empowerment and enhancing of healthcare services, supporting vulnerable groups, and promoting income diversification through by-products like honey and cascara. Ultimately, the project seeks to foster a more resilient, sustainable, and equitable coffee value chain in Ethiopia.</narrative>
