       "": "Kenya is prone to slow-onset natural disasters like\ndroughts, slow-onset natural disasters like droughts\nand famine, and rapid-onset disasters like floods,\nland/mudslides and disease outbreaks. Climate\nchange is leading to increases in both the frequency\nand intensity of natural disasters, whilst population\ngrowth, regional unrest and forced population\nmovement drives conflict. The recurrent nature of these\ndisasters in Kenya inherently affects the capacity of\ncommunities to recover, which lowers economic output\nand holds back development year on year.\nEffective, well-organised and prepared responses\nhelp mitigate the effects of disasters. Satellite systems\nprovide a secure, resilient, always-on infrastructure\nin disaster situations – providing critical tools for\nemergency communications and situation assessment.\nWorking with Government Agencies and the Red\nCross Society in Kenya, Avanti and its partners\nwill undertake a Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)\ndevelopment programme, which will use satellite\ntechnology to improve Kenyan capacity to effectively\nplan for and respond to disasters.\nThe project will support the development of Kenyan\nAgencies and Responders by:\n• Engaging with Kenyan partners to understand\ntheir disaster management priorities, identify\nsolutions and embed capability through policy\nsupport, knowledge transfer, specialist training and\nfield exercises.\n• Building the capacity of Kenyan staff to prepare,\ndeploy and utilise satellite services for DRR.\n• Provide a pilot platform for local actors to deploy\nsatellite communication and Earth Observation\nservices for DRR.\n• Enhancing co-ordination, command and control of\ndisaster response at local, regional and national level",
