Objectives
The objective of the Sustainable Urban Transport Project for Ethiopia is to demonstrate the applicability of a new generation of e-BRT systems in Addis Ababa with innovative solutions that are economically viable and enhanced with new automation and connectivity functionalities. Ultimately, the main objective is to support the government securing financial resources to implement BRT B3 and B4 lines to reduce GHG emissions in the transport sector across Ethiopia.
General
To solve the transportation challenges observed in Addis Ababa, the city government in addition to introducing the 34kms light railway system, through its current master plan is preparing to come up with a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The BRT project is aimed to ensure safe, convenient and timely public mass transportation system in the capital. Based on current BRT construction and electric bus introduction plans of Korean EXIM Bank and Addis Ababa city, through this project GGGI has identified the possibility of scaling up the initiatives through following recommendations:· Integrating Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Multi-modal Transfer Centers. · Introducing intermodal facilities in stations for making easy to transfer between LRT and BRT.· Designing an existing bus/para transit scarp program.· Developing feeder line plan for integrating all public transport systems among LRT and BRT lines.· Adopting parking Management and enforcement plans along the BRT corridor.· Developing station/Transfer area design. BRT station and transfer locations (intermodal facilities) offer commercial development. Commercial development at those locations can be designed for increasing non-fare revenue and transfer facility improvement.· Initiating e-BRT concept for 15 BRT lines including EXIM Bank’s 3, 4, and 6 lines through the establishment of the roadmap. · Preparing e-buses procurement and resource mobilization plans for the operation of eco-friendly buses and other operations related to last-mile connectivity.· Designing business models for facilitating the adoption of e-buses in BRT lines.
