UNMISS blev oprettet som en FN mission af Sikkerhedsrådsresolution 1996 (2011) som følge af Sydsudans selvstændighed i 2011. Missionen skal bl.a. forebygge endnu en borgerkrig og sikre fred samt udførelsen af fredsaftalen.
