General
The "Child Labour-Free Fonio Supply Chain" initiative aims at creating a sustainable and ethical fonio production process in Burkina Faso. The project is structured around five key activities: 1. Agricultural development and training; 2. Market positioning and consumer trust;3. Child rights protection; 4. Gender equality; 5. Advocacy and legal compliance.Fonio production in Burkina Faso is currently plagued by issues such as the use of child labour, limited agricultural knowledge, and gender disparities. The lack of proper infrastructure, training, and financial support hampers the community's ability to produce fonio sustainably. Additionally, the absence of ethical certifications and market positioning limits access to international markets, where demand for ethically produced goods is growing. The project primarily targets smallholder farmers, women’s processing groups, and children in fonio-producing regions of Burkina Faso. Smallholder farmers will benefit from training in sustainable agricultural practices, subsidies for equipment and seeds, and access to new markets. Women’s groups, who play a crucial role in processing fonio, will receive support to improve their economic opportunities and reduce gender disparities. Children, who are often at risk of being exploited for labour, are benefiting through initiatives aimed at keeping them in school and safeguarding their rights. The local government is engaged through collaboration on enforcing child labour laws, supporting community sensitization efforts, and participating in the development of guidelines to ensure compliance and sustainability throughout the Fonio supply chain.Through these activities, the project partners aim to improve food security and the economic situation of targeted households. Through ethical certification and business engagements, the project partners enhance market positioning and trust. Simultaneously, gender disparity will be reduced and regulations and laws on child labour will be applied. Overall, the project aims to prevent and combat exploitative child labour in the fonio sector.
