General
The program aims to improve direct and indirect water use and behavior in 5 municipalities in Flanders, including schools, civil society organizations, businesses and citizens, and wants to share the views on the right to drinking water and sanitation and water use with other water actors and policy makers. The amount of water available to us in the world is finite, and as a result of increasing consumption, population growth and climate change, water supplies are coming under pressure. Direct water is the physical water that we use in Flanders to produce a product or service. Indirect water is the physical water that is used in another country to produce a product or service. Our consumption pattern determines the extent to which the population can develop water in developing countries through indirect water use. The program is working on a change in use and behavior in 5 municipalities (both on the administrative level and on the staff), and in the schools in these municipalities, thereby laying the link between our water use and the global water problem. Municipalities and schools will undertake a process of raising awareness, concrete actions for a reduction of direct and indirect use and an anchoring in municipal and school policy. Civil society organizations and (water) companies are involved in these processes, and the population is made aware of this problem. The program starts in 4 municipalities (Roeselare, Merelbeke, Bierbeek and Kortrijk), and will expand to a 5th municipality. It is carried out through a collaboration of organizations with complementary expertise: Join For Water (Protos), Ecolife, Djapo, VVSG (Flemisch Association of Cities and Municipalities) and VLAKWA / VITO (Flemish Water Knowledge Center / Flemish institution for technological research).
