development in Colombia, DAP funded a project by the local organisation Makaia, which provided a training program aimed at promoting women’s self-employment through digital skills. The initiative focused on providing practical and holistic support to 12 participants, 10 of them women, resulting in 100% of them successfully completing the program. ‍ The project delivered specialized training sessions in front-end development, back-end development, and data analysis, tailored to the needs of early-stage learners. Recognising the multifaceted barriers women often face when entering the tech field, the program also included personal development components such as soft skills training, career orientation, English language instruction, and psychosocial support. ‍ Rather than focusing only on traditional employment pathways, the program emphasized self-employment as a viable and empowering outcome. Graduates were supported in creating personal branding strategies, and accessing platforms to offer their digital services. Australia and Honduras have the two largest coral reefs in the world and both countries are taking action to preserve them. Honduras is home to an important section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef in the world, stretching along the country’s Caribbean coast, especially around the Bay Islands (Roatán). ‍ The Australian Embassy in Mexico through its Direct Aid Program funded NGO Roatan Marine Park to implement a project to provide comprehensive training to volunteer community members on marine patrol activities, including reporting marine life sightings and utilising the iPATROL app for incident recording including suspected cases of illegal fishing. This training empowered community members to proactively care for natural marine resources and ecosystems. ‍ Activities included four community beach cleanups, training for ten new members of their Community Patrols program and two events at local schools to promote the program and attract new volunteers. In the Brazilian Amazon, DAP supported indigenous NGO Iepé on the release of 3,291 yellow-spotted Amazon River turtles, a vulnerable species. The program involved 23 indigenous communities from the Oiapoque Indigenous Land, including 36 indigenous environmental agents. The activities included capacity building for indigenous environmental agents on how to manage turtle eggs and care for hatchlings until release, as well as environmental education actions in local schools. In addition to the immediate results in turtle conservation, the organization reports a long-term impact including the strengthening of traditional indigenous knowledge, environmental and territorial management in the Oiapoque region. In the wetlands of Ayapel, Córdoba, in Colombia, a transformative environmental initiative led by CorpoAyapel and financed by DAP successfully mobilised communities to protect one of Colombia’s most vital ecosystems. Through a series of educational workshops, awareness campaigns, tree planting activities, and community clean-up days, the initiative engaged residents, schools, and local leaders in the collective care of the wetlands. ‍ One of the key components of the program was the strengthening of the Eco Almacén, a community-based exchange centre where individuals could trade recyclable waste for eco-bonds, redeemable for school supplies or donations to vulnerable families. ‍ As a result of this multi-stakeholder approach, the volume of recycled materials in the region increased from 150 tons in 2023 to 375 tons by the end of 2024, reducing significantly pollution in the wetlands. On 24 October 2023, Hurricane “Otis,” a Category 5 storm (the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale), made landfall and devastated the coastal city of Acapulco. It is estimated to have caused at least 52 deaths and between USD12-16 million in damages. ‍ Through its Direct Aid Program, the Australian Embassy in Mexico funded the Mexican Red Cross to deliver humanitarian aid kits to 73 families, which included food, hygiene kits, and cleaning supplies. Project Mujeres Fuertes (Strong Women) supports migrant and refugee single mothers, with a primary focus on Venezuelans, by promoting opportunities for professional development, psychosocial support, and income generation through small businesses in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. ‍ The project assisted around 100 women during the 7th and 8th editions as part of a broader program, providing capacity building in entrepreneurship, soft skills, female empowerment, and a culinary program. Post's DAP funding supported women to attend the culinary courses, including transportation and food vouchers, as well as child-care services during classes. Results show an increase on the number of women with culinary-related income after the program, promoting their economic autonomy and personal confidence. Puebla is one of the Mexican states with the highest rates of lead poisoning, largely due to the significant levels of lead content in traditional pottery used for cooking. Through its Direct Aid Program, the Australian Embassy in Mexico funded NGO Pure Earth to support Nahua indigenous women entrepreneurs from Coapexco, Puebla to revive family pottery traditions in a healthier, culturally respectful way. ‍ The project improved the safety protocols through upgrading ovens and it raised awareness of the dangers of the use of lead in pottery production, and provided alternative options for women entrepreneurs. The optimised ovens also significantly reduce time required to produce pottery. ‍ The project further supported women entrepreneurs with new business skills, including how to diversify their markets, and empowered the women to take on community leadership roles to share knowledge with younger entrepreneurs. The project included design and marketing workshops to help women entrepreneurs to enhance competitiveness through developing a unique style. The fishing community of El Bosque ("The Forest"), located in Centla, Tabasco, is facing a severe humanitarian crisis caused by coastal erosion due to the impacts of climate change. This is the first community in Mexico that has been acknowledged by the Mexican government as officially "displaced by climate change". ‍ Community members lost access to key infrastructure such as homes, schools, and access to basic services. The Australian Embassy in Mexico through its Direct Aid Program funded a project led by NGO Nuestro Derecho al Futuro A.C. for the provision of immediate humanitarian aid through the distribution of food packages and the implementation of a community workshop which trained the community about climate change resilience, and encouraging their active participation in a dignified relocation process. ‍ The distribution of food kits commenced in July 2024, with the final kits delivered in December 2024. This occurred in parallel with the relocation of the community, led by Mexican authorities and civil society. As of 2 December 2024, 51 families have been successfully relocated to the first new community now called “El Nuevo Bosque” ("The New Forest"). Through the Centro de Atención a la Mujer Migrante (CAMMI) program, and with support from the Australian Embassy in Bogota, Fundación Unimédicos has made significant strides in promoting access to sexual and reproductive health across key regions of Colombia. Central to this progress have been 11 educational and awareness-raising sessions held in cities where the program operates, each of them supported by Australian funding through the Direct Aid Program program. ‍ Activities have included awareness campaigns, personalized counselling sessions, the distribution of menstrual hygiene kits, and the provision of both short- and long-term contraceptive methods. To date, the program has delivered tailored counselling sessions on sexual and reproductive health to 122 participants, primarily women and adolescents. It has also facilitated specialised consultations around voluntary termination of pregnancy to 85 women ensuring that they have access to safe, rights-based reproductive care. ‍ In addition to counselling, the initiative has distributed 358 menstrual hygiene kits, 68 long-term contraceptives, and 55 oral contraceptives. With support from the DAP Program, Fundación Mi Sangre implemented a comprehensive initiative to empower young people in Colombia through psychosocial support, mental health promotion, and social leadership. The program was rolled out in two Caribbean municipalities: Montes de María and Cartagena, reaching vulnerable youth with tools to lead social change and care for their emotional well-being. ‍ In total, 88 young leaders were certified across two cohorts. Throughout the program, youth received ongoing guidance to design and lead their own community-based initiatives. A total of 28 social initiatives were developed: 13 successfully implemented in the first cohort, and 15 more in progress with the second. ‍ The initiative also delivered a series of thematic webinars to build core competencies in areas such as conflict resolution, mental health, psychological first aid, and strategies for addressing gender-based violence. These sessions reached 18 municipalities and brought together more than 765 youth in 34 community spaces.
