In Caprivi region in Namibia, the project is expected to benefit a rural population of about 25,000 who base their livelihood on agriculture and tourism. Le projet proposé est un projet prioritaire de la politique du secteur de l’énergie des gouvernements de la Zambie et de la Namibie. Cela répondra essentiellement à la demande d'approvisionnement prévue dans l'ouest de la Zambie et à Katima Mulilo en Namibie. Le projet améliorera également les performances techniques du réseau en augmentant la fiabilité et la stabilité du réseau et en réduisant les pertes. Cela permettra : a) ZESCO à étendre l’approvisionnement en réseau national aux centres ruraux et périurbains de la Zambie occidentale; et (b) NamPower à mettre à la disposition des différents secteurs socio-économiques de la région de Caprivi une électricité relativement peu coûteuse et fiable. Le projet comprend la construction d'environ 190 km de réseau de transport à un seul circuit de 132 kV entre Victoria Falls (sud de la Zambie) et Katima Mulilo (ville frontalière du nord de la Namibie). The proposed project is a priority project in the energy sector policy of the governments of Zambia and Namibia. It will essentially meet the forecast supply demand in Western Zambia and Katima Mulilo in Namibia. The project will also improve the technical network performance through increase in network reliability and stability and reduction of losses. It will enable (a) ZESCO to extend the national grid supply to the rural and peri-urban centres in Western Zambia; and (b) NamPower to make available relatively cheap and reliable electricity to the various socio-economic sectors at Caprivi region. The project involves the construction of approximately 190 km of single circuit 132 kV transmission network from Victoria Falls (southern Zambia) to Katima Mulilo (northern border town in Namibia). The Zambian portion of the line is approximately 185 km whilst the balance of 5 km is located in Namibia. The objectives of the project are to provide adequate and reliable electricity to a boarder town in Namibia and the Western Region of Zambia. The project, primarily, aims at strengthening the existing supply to Caprivi in Namibia, by extending 132 kV transmission line from Victoria Falls (Zambia) to Katima-Mulilo (Namibia). The project will also strengthen the supply network in Western Region of Zambia and thus will advance the extension of the national grid supply to rural centres in the region.
