DESCRIPTION
The project responds to the critical water shortage situation in the villages that provided assistance to the community of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled the terror of the Islamic State. Despite its defeat in 2017, Iraq is still in a phase of ongoing reconstruction, complicated by both security and economic instability. The situation in the villages was also made more difficult by the fading pandemic and the decision to gradually close camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs). People who leave the camps have nowhere to return and at the same time stop receiving the necessary help. After leaving the camp, many of them therefore seek refuge in municipalities that have accepted IDPs in the past, which further increases the burden on their (water) infrastructure. The goal of the project is to improve living conditions and develop municipalities. By building 2 wells, the residents of Doghat and Darkar will get stable and safe access to drinking water, which will also allow them to develop their growing and breeding activities. By creating the conditions for development, tension between the host and IDP communities (a total of 16,720 people) will be avoided. The conditions of women and children who currently provide water for their households will improve (SDG 5) and at the same time the production of plastic waste from purchased bottled water and the emissions associated with its distribution will be reduced (SDG 13). The creation of suitable conditions will be supported by trainings where local communities - including women - will gain knowledge about the protection of water resources, about cultivation and breeding activities. Part of the training will focus on drinking habits and hygiene to prevent the spread of disease. 320 IDP families will also receive seed packages to support their food security.
