In 2023, Mexico received an unprecedented 127,796 asylum applications, marking a 29% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This surge solidifies Mexico's position as a significant destination country for individuals seeking international protection in the Americas and a major transit area for those involved in the growing northbound mixed movements. UNHCR actively supports the Government of Mexico in its endeavors to safeguard the rights and well-being of those forced to flee their home countries. Our mission includes ensuring that individuals escaping violence and persecution can access protection and apply for asylum. Furthermore, UNHCR works towards promoting durable solutions, fostering local integration through close collaboration with partners and host communities.
