General
There has never been a more urgent time to invest in understanding, disseminating evidence on, and addressing the challenges of young people in West and Central Africa (WCA). The 24-country area known as WCA has a population of over 470 million people and is projected to reach 1.2 billion by 2050. One-third of the region’s population is aged between 10 and 24 years old. By 2025, WCA will not only have the largest number of young people globally, but it will also be the only region in the world where the population of young people will continue to grow. With support from IDRC, the International Center for Research on Women is planning a special issue of the African Journal of Reproductive Health. This leading public health journal in Africa is increasingly the go-to journal for actionable sexual and reproductive health (SRH) evidence by policy actors in the region. The special issue will bring together research and insights that will help West African scholars, practitioners, and the public to develop a more nuanced understanding of the intersections of gender and SRH issues that are part of the everyday lives of adolescents in WCA. This special issue represents the first-ever attempt to consolidate and publish evidence on the intersections of gender and SRH among adolescents in WCA by distilling insights on the contextual nuances and local/regional dynamics of the gender-health nexus and paying attention to the peculiarities of gender and health among young people. This project contributes to sharing knowledge and strengthening Southern voices in the national, regional and global debates around gender equality and health, as articulated in IDRC’s objectives in Strategy 2030.
