Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the cause of one-third of deaths in Argentina. An unhealthy diet is a major contributor to CVD and the related rapidly increasing incidence of obesity and diabetes in the country. However, there is not enough information about the extent to which people from different socio-economic groups have access to healthy foods. This project proposes to improve understanding of the factors that affect food purchasing, and specifically how the food environment is affecting accessibility and affordability of healthy food among different social groups. Implemented by the Buenos Aires-based Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad, this project will generate knowledge on the different factors that affect diet quality in Argentina, focusing on price, consumer preference, and food retail structure, including the availability of healthy foods. The team will use a mix of econometric modelling (for tax analysis and consumption demand modelling), statistical analyses (tracking relative price changes), and an environmental study (to describe household behavioural patterns). The project will also describe policy options and a regulatory framework for municipal and national-level actions that would support healthier diets. It will address how gender disparities and socio-economic differences in food purchasing can be reduced. The project will also strengthen local and national capacity to assess food environments and the policies that influence them in order to promote healthy eating and NCD prevention.
Les maladies cardiovasculaires (MCV) sont la cause d’un tiers des décès en Argentine. Un régime alimentaire malsain contribue grandement aux MCV ainsi qu’à l’incidence connexe et croissante d’obésité et de diabète dans le pays. Toutefois, les renseignements sont insuffisants pour déterminer dans quelle mesure les membres de différents groupes socio-économiques ont accès à des aliments sains. Ce projet propose d’améliorer la compréhension des facteurs qui ont une incidence sur l’achat d’aliments, et particulièrement sur la façon dont l’environnement alimentaire influence l’accessibilité et l’abordabilité des aliments sains parmi différents groupes sociaux. Mis en œuvre par le Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad établi à Buenos Aires, ce projet permettra de produire des connaissances générales sur les différents facteurs qui ont une incidence sur la qualité du régime alimentaire en Argentine, en mettant l’accent sur le prix, les préférences des consommateurs et la structure du commerce de détail alimentaire, incluant la disponibilité d’aliments sains. L’équipe utilisera une combinaison de modélisation économétrique (pour l’analyse fiscale et la modélisation de la demande de consommation), d’analyses statistiques (surveiller les changements de prix relatifs) et une analyse environnementale (pour décrire les tendances comportementales des ménages). Le projet décrira également les possibilités en matière de politique et un cadre réglementaire pour les actions municipales et nationales qui pourraient soutenir des régimes alimentaires plus sains. Il permettra d’étudier la façon dont les inégalités entre les sexes et les écarts socio-économiques qui déterminent l’achat d’aliments peuvent être réduits. Ce projet renforcera également la capacité locale et nationale à évaluer les environnements alimentaires et les politiques qui les influencent afin de promouvoir un régime sain et la prévention des MNT.
