General
InSight Crime Incoporated, a non-profit organization duly established in Washington DC, and with an office in Colombia, is dedicated to the study of organized crime as a threat to national and citizen security in Latin America and the Caribbean. The project aligns with the first area of the Strategy of Sweden in Latin America, specially on human rights, transparency and anti-corruption. The objective of the project is to produce at least 12 investigations, on the following matters: 1) how the modern State has been distorted by criminal interests in Central America, Colombia and Venezuela; 2) how the role of gender is evolving in some respects inside criminal organizations, but largely static in others, especially as it relates the construction and development of street and prison gangs; 3) how governments forge and undermine peace processes and truces, and what the consequences of these policies are.
Objectives
This project has a main objective of producing 12-15 investigative reports on organized crime in Central America and Colombia-Venezuela and two specific sub-goals: 1) Provide knowledge, information and understanding regarding systemic problems of corruption and crime, specifically regarding gender and organized crime, institutional corruption and penetration of the State, and the difficulties of negotiating with criminal groups. 2) Provoke reflection and discussion around these topics by publishing these investigations on InSight Crimes site, but also by posting on its social media channels and interacting with the audience, co-publishing with partner and allied media, and organizing a public event to present the investigations.

Main Achievements during the whole activity period (October 2020 - September 2023): - InSight Crime produced 17 investigations during the time of the project (2020-2023): three (3) in 2021, eight (8) in 2022 and six (6) in 2023 covering the three topics of the project. They have surpassed their goal of producing maximum 15 investigations. By 2022, they had already achieved the objective of publishing at least 12 investigations. These investigations were summarized in the narrative reports and were accompanied by an impact report measuring their number of views and reach. - The publications are of high quality and has allowed them to win awards and be quoted in very important media in the region such as El Tiempo and El Espectador (Colombia), La Patilla (Venezuela), el Faro (El Salvador), different media from Guatemala and Mexico and regional media such as NTN24, Radio Ambulante and Latin America Risk Report. Their investigations were quoted 200 times in different media of the region. - They conducted 3 workshops on research methodologies and coverage with a gender perspective for more than 60 journalists in Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala and Honduras. - They organized 3 virtual events with experts on Colombia and Venezuela, attended by more than 1,300 people. - They had 3 award nominations and have won 2 second places. - Sida´s normative dialogue on gender issues has had substantial impact on their work and a positive unexpected result is the mainstreaming of a gender perspective across InSight Crime activities.
