DESCRIPTION
The Malawi Agricultural Cluster Initiative (MACI) is a program aimed at enhancing food systems in Malawi by developing agricultural clusters to support smallholder farmers and strengthen value chains for crops like soybeans and groundnuts. By coordinating stakeholders such as farmers, local governments, private sector actors, and development partners, MACI seeks to transform Malawi’s agriculture from subsistence to commercial farming. It will address systemic issues like limited market access, low productivity, and insufficient infrastructure by fostering collaboration, shared resources, and sustainable practices. MACI’s goal is to improve productivity, increase rural incomes, and ensure food security while encouraging investments in value-added processing. MACI includes women and youth in all aspects of the project to ensure their economic participation and leadership in agriculture, as well as promotes awareness and attitude changes to create a more inclusive society. The project will strengthen smallholder farmers' resilience to disasters through training in risk-reducing measures and access to insurance services. This will help reduce the vulnerability of communities and ensures sustainable development. MACI will also implement climate-smart agricultural practices such as drought-resistant seeds and improved water management to increase smallholder farmers' resilience to climate change. Impact: Increased economic growth and productivity in Malawi's agricultural sector through enhanced value chain efficiency, increased household income, and resilient livelihoods. Outcome 1: Enhanced coordination mechanisms and effectiveness of cluster/project actors and delivery Outcome 2: Improved enabling environment for inclusive markets, trade and finance Outcome 3: Enhanced capacity of key stakeholders on agricultural commercialization Target group: Smallholder farmers, Youth and Women, Local SMEs, Farmer Organizations Focus districts: Lilongwe and Kasungu
