DESCRIPTION
The overall goal of this project is to support indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) in Guyana to successfully pursue their sustainable development, guided by their Village Sustainability Plans (VSP) in the framework of Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy. The project will strengthen the capacity of IPLCs, including village leadership and the National Toshaos Council, to lead the development of VSPs as well as to implement them. The National Toshaos Council will be implementing partner and a sub-grantee of Conservation International for the project implementation. The funding for this project is part of the results-based payments earned by Guyana under the Guyana-Norway bilateral REDD+ cooperation. 242 amerindian villages and communities will benefit from the project. The planned outcomes are to equip villages for long-term sustainability i) planning and ii) implementation, as well as to iii) establish a system to monitor, evaluate and imrpove VSP implementation. The project will also equip the NTC and the Ministry of Amerinidian affaris to support effective VSP planing, implementation and monitoring. Finally, the project, acknowledging there might be gender dynamics and socio-cultural barriers to participation and inclusion in the village planning processes, will actively promote the participation of women and youth, and report on issues of gender equality.
