General
With over two million youth entering the workforce every year, there is significant demographic pressure on Ethiopia’s economy. As a result, a growing number of Ethiopians look for job opportunities in urban areas or migrate abroad. According to NMFE (2020), this is especially common in Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar, two urban centres that have seen an influx of rural-urban migration among young people looking for employment but who lack employability skills and job training and experience. According to the data obtained from Bahir Dar city administration labor and training department, in 2021 the number of youths between the age of 15 and 29 reaches 46,897 and out of this 14,935 were unemployed. This indicates about 32% of youths in this specific age group are neither in education nor in employment. One of the key drivers mentioned in different studies of youth unemployment is the gap between skills that young people possess and have access to and those demanded by employers. Furthermore, gender inequality contributes to poor health and employment outcomes for adolescent girls and young women and is driven by early marriage and exclusion from certain sectors and industries. Young urban women have the highest unemployment rates in the country (31%). In addition to economic exclusions, evidence revealed that age and marital status contribute to the rate of induced abortion in Ethiopia, despite also having rate of highest contraceptive utilization and lowest unmet need. Considering that 47% of abortions in Ethiopia are performed outside of health facilities, it is critical to target women in this demographic (younger, unmarried, urban) to ensure that their need for family planning is met. The DHS Data obtained from Bahir Dar city administration health department regarding youth between the age of 15 and 29 suggests that the unmet need for family planning is about 63%. Neither public nor private contraceptive options meet the demands of young people.
