The Impact Cluster “Fish farming for economic development and conservation in East-Rwanda” is an initiative of a consortium of Dutch and Rwandan companies, in close cooperation with the Netherlands embassy in Kigali, that intends to tackle the aquaculture challenges in Rwanda (a.o. lack of high quality fingerlings, lack of practical education, high costs of feed, high resource use, post harvest losses) through an integrated value chain approach.This will be achieved through the establishment of a fully integrated recirculation-based demonstration fish farm for African catfish and tilapia in collaboration with Akagera National park, including feed storage, hatchery, nursery, grow-out tanks and cold storage facilities. The impact cluster plans to demonstrate a highly efficient, land based fish farm system, by demonstrating recirculation based aquaculture in a demonstration farm.The system consists of a tank with an integrated bio filter (for water purification and re-use of water) and superstructure. The system applies recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) providing significantly higher volumes of sustainably produced fish, at lower production costs and in close proximity to the market.The viability of this concept both economically and technically has been successfully tested in Rwanda through the establishment of a grow-out tank near Bugesera.
