General
This project has addressed risks in the soy supply chain in the Gran Chaco of Argentina, by promoting the application of social and environmental sustainability criteria. These criteria include among others deforestation- and conversion-free production, responsible management of chemicals and respect for labor laws.Project interventions included "area mass balance" certification (supporting farmers to become certified in areas that link to the trader's physical trade chain), and promoting "direct trade" (companies directly supporting responsible production in the Gran Chaco), as well as carrying out capacity building for stepwise sustainability improvements by farmers. On top of the responsible production interventions, the project also started a nature regeneration pilot combined with sustainable production in this soy and cattle producing region. This way, the Soy Chaco project has contributed to the maintenance and further market uptake of responsibly produced soy and additional nature conservation. Insecurities about measures to take, and fear of costs resulting from the upcoming European Union (EU) Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) played a role as challenges in the project, as well as climate shocks and political economic factors. Market parties as well as non-governmental (NGO) partners will however continue their engagement with the region, by concentrating on well-verified EUDR compliant production and the further support to farmers who produce responsibly.
