General
In the coconut cultivation in the Philippines, millions of smallholder farmers are engaged. They often live in remote areas in poverty, without access to education. Although literature on this is scarce, it seems that children may do unpaid family work in the process from land preparation to harvesting. These young workers (15-17 years old) may be found in processing facilities working in hazardous conditions.Coconut processing and trading companies such as Wilmar and Cargill, predominantly have indirect commercial relationships with coconut farmers, with middlemen delivering copra to their crush plants, making possible child farm labour less visible. The companies that are part of this consortium are committed to this challenge, and therefore keen to be part of a project on combatting child labour in the coconut supply chain. Overall, as a consortium, consisting of not only individual companies, but also sector associations and specialized non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the aim is to develop an operational plan to address protection of children’s rights in the coconut sector in the Philippines in the long term.
