The Dutch company Thatchtec B.V. has developed several innovative, biobased products as alternatives for chemical formulations.With this project, the company wants to demonstrate in the Philippines, the biobased soil decontamination concept of Soil Resetting (SR) in the banana cultivation for the purpose of combating the (traces of the) fungus Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense TR4 (Foc), known as Panama Disease.This fungus is a threat to the entire global banana cultivation. Roughly 100,000 hectares have already been affected worldwide (and excluded for banana cultivation), without there being any control solutions, the spread does not seem to stop in recent years, all local measures prove ineffective and the disease is gradually becoming agronomically unpredictable and uncontrollable. Traces of the fungus survive in the soil for a very long time (a few decades) and removal of the diseased plants followed by replanting on the area is useless: the fungus will immediately affect the replanted crop.Main goal of this project is to demonstrate the patented Dutch technology SR on full-scale (0.5+ ha) industrial demonstration on three plots (0.5 ha), incorporating variations in climatological conditions and soil composition into account, using local labour and Dutch equipment are part of the demonstration project. Also, local prospects will be trained on the use of SR in banana culture in terms of proper use of equipment and reduction of cross-contamination risks. During the project, the reduction of the Foc TR4-level will be monitored in detailed, coupled with the ability to replant the Cavendish variety on the disinfected soil.
