Elemental emerged from a participatory research and design process that was grounded in deep listening, collective ideation, and liberatory vision. It reflects the experiences, insights, and analysis of global movement leaders, narrative practitioners, and funders working across issues, identities, and geographies. Building on and complementing existing work in the philanthropic sector and the field, Elemental seeks to contribute to an enabling environment for resourcing narrative power — and prefigure the future of philanthropy in how we show up today. - Publishing articles and podcasts in multiple languages on how to fund narrative ecosystems and infrastructure - Presenting at philanthropy events, such as Human Rights Funders Network, Philea, andNetwork of European Foundations - Partnering with funder affinity groups, such as EDGE Funders Alliance, Global Fund for Community Foundations, and Ariadne Network - Contributing to the funder engagement efforts of movement leaders and narrative practitioners, such as Puentes, ReFrame, GlobalNarrative Hive, Hope-based Communications, and the Radical Communicators Network

General
This innovative and experimental fund seeks to ‘walk the talk’ on resourcing care for activists, generate valuable lessons for other funders, and explore how to fund care as a means of movement strengthening. This project will promote the right to leisure/pleasure for activists and explore the value of rest in the context of everyday, mundane, unglamorous practices that move us toward systemic transformation. We want to experiment with collective and co-creative methods, practices and approaches that challenge deeply heldbeliefs about care, identify and articulate what care looks like and where it is needed, and provide insights on how to fund practices in ways that build structures that enable care. In Year One, we will co-design the fund with 10 activists using participatory design methods to determine the scope, eligibility criteria, funding amount, decision-making process, and learning goals, which will be implemented in Year Two. The activist co-designers will provide initial insights into what ‘a pause’ means as part of collective and individual care through an invitation to participate in a virtual 'Rest Residency’ where they will receive unrestricted funding to ‘take a pause’however they define it. Their experiences will be compiled and shared in a story collection: ten ways to pause care-fully. The activist co-designers will be nominated by Elemental, Digital Narratives Studio, and Tipping Point and selected by lottery. In Year Two, we will expand the project by implementing the fund through an open call and applying participatory action researchmethods to identify and articulate what ‘a pause’ means and looks like for climate justice activists in different contexts as part of movement strengthening. This research will be compiled and distributed in a manual of care practices for activists. It will also be used to create a repository of care practices that strengthen movements, which funders can use to determine how to resource pauses. We will also document the process and share insights withother funders on how to fund pauses in their own grant making.
