General
The RiD program is co-designed by farmer associations, civil society organizations and agricultural research organizations . It will work with smallholder farmers in arid and semi-arid zones of Niger (FUMA GASKIYA) to create local climate-resilient food systems, focusing on: (1) Improving access to and recognition of crop diversity for local food and nutrition security. Building on the proven, gender-transformative, Farmer Field School-based approaches to participatory plant breeding, seed production andnutrition , it will strengthen the ability of smallholder farmers to : increase crop and varietal diversity and improve agroecological cropping methods to boost production and adapt to climate change; promote the use and social acceptance of locally available plants for nutrition;and support bulking of seed to revive agricultural activities in fragile/post-disaster areas. (2) Increasing access to livelihood and income opportunities through diverse local value chains. Building on (1), the program will stimulate demand for i) farmer-produced, high-quality seed of diverse locally adapted crop varieties; ii) grain and produce for consumption and iii) nutrition-rich food products. It will promote tested tools and techniques for food processing and preservation that reduce women’s household burden, include vulnerable groups and people with disabilities , and reduce food waste . The program will enhance and test innovative market approaches , improve collaboration among smallholder farmers and local value chain actors, increase consumption by raising awareness of the (nutritional) qualities of diverse crop varieties, and improve access to finance for business development and seed cooperatives . (3) Supporting innovative farmer-researcher partnerships and (4)promoting a collaborative environment for systemic food and agriculture policy change. This will underpin and enable activities (1) and (2), generating evidence and supporting the uptake of lessons through new inclusive ways of working, co-learning toolsand exchanges between East, Southern and West African partners. In a crosscutting manner, and building on existing consortium alliances and networks, the program will promote an enabling environment for all areas of work, by generating evidence-based policy advice and an influencing strategy that emphasizes farmers’ rights and women’svoices, including access to land, thus ensuring sustainability of the program.
