350.org
350Africa.org is the lead organization of the Fair Finance Coalition in South Africa. It is part of an international movement working to end the age of fossil fuels and build a world of community-led renewable energy for all. The organization uses grassroots organizing to run locally-driven campaigns in every corner of the globe. A small team of paid staff supports grassroots activists running their own independent, loosely affiliated organizations and campaigns across the continent. 350Africa.org believes that the onlyway we’ll see meaningful action on climate change is if we can counter the power of the fossil fuel industry with the power of people taking collective action. The head office is based in the USA. The branch in South Africa is legally established in South Africa. The internal systems are fully integrated in the central 350.0rg systems.

General
South Africa is hugely dependent on coal and fossil fuels, resulting in high GHG emissions and impacts on communities. Mozambique is trying to rely on gas exports as a source of income, but the benefits do not trickle down to the population and infrastructure projects exacerbate conflicts. The Fair Finance Coalition Southern Africa (FFCSA) focuses specifically on the energy sector, climate change, human rights, gender equality and transparency and accountability. The coalition advocates for the creationof financial mechanisms that facilitate investment in and accelerate a just transition. FFCSA will publish research on projects financed by the main PFIs (Public Finance Institutions) active in Southern Africa and organize workshops and trainings with CSOs. Among the PFIs targeted are DFIs, MDBs and the Public Investment Corporation, which invests the pension savings of South African government employees. FFCSAis working on public scrutiny of financial flows going to South Africa as part of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) between South Africa and donors from Europe and North America. The Coalition has followed and commented on the South African JETP, the first JETP to be announced89. FFCSA has conducted advocacy meetings with important stakeholders in the JETP, including the DBSA and the South African Presidential Climate Commission. FFCSA is forging alliances with CSOs in other countries who are also engaging in the JETPs. In terms of capacity building, FFCSA will organize a face-to-face Fair Finance School on a yearly basis, to train CSOs and CBOs in influencing FIs and will develop an online training curriculum. Journalists will also be trained in climate finance issues. The coalition will work to improve grievance mechanisms of PFIs by supporting communities to engage with PFIs. The FFCSA coalitionwill publish at least 2 case studies per year during the grant period, at least one positive (especially community-led renewable energy). With positive case studies, the coalition intends to inspire FIs to follow positive example projects and best practices by other FIs. The coalition will publish 2 Policy Assessments (2024 and 2026), covering the AfDB, DBSA, IDC, ECIC, NDB and PIC90. FFCSA consists of 7 organizations: 350Africa.org (lead partner), Center for Environmental Rights (CER), the Africa Climate Reality Project (ACRP), Oxfam South Africa, Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS), Justica Ambiental and Earthlife Africa.
