Butterfly Works (BW) is a social innovation studio that creates communication and education projects in emerging economies. Building on 15 years of experience, they apply tools and methods from the creative sector to social issues worldwide. By connecting to talented people across the world, Butterfly Works co-creates tailor-made solutions – never copy-paste and always human-centered. Butterfly Works has a longstanding experience in improving curriculums and works together with existing educational institutions, ministries and young people themselves to set up so-called ‘Bits Schools.’ Bit Schools are schools that provide young people the opportunity to develop their ICT-skills, providing them the future prospect of becoming for example a DTP employee or software developer. In addition Butterfly Works is specialized in the Human Centered Design methodology, designing and piloting solutions with youth to solveissues identified by youth. Butterfly Works will be active in all three countries of Work in Progress and in Indonesia for Empower Youth for Work.

General
BW is partnering with Oxfam Novib to support the development and implementation of user research, to understand the needs and expectations of partners and activists. The research will help shape the desired learning experience of partners and activists and to find opportunities for them to connect and exchange. As part of the Activist academy Oxfam specifically wants to explore how to supportactivists from The Netherlands, Peru, Lebanon and Tanzania with match-making and with building stronger connections among themselves as well as across countries, with exploring the international dimension to national campaigns and with diversity and inclusion. Main deliverables: ● A well informed user research that showcases the needs and expectations of the participants including an Exploration Lab package and tools adapted for the participants needs and context ● A concept ideation workshop and prototype that provides insights and recommendations for next steps. Our user research will include tools for an Exploration Lab. An Exploration Lab is a methodology that allows participants to be their own active researchers. The Exploration Lab was developed by Butterfly Works and is truly participatory design research. Exploration Labs are carried out by the participants themselves. Our Exploration Lab (EL) celebrates the lived reality of participants and provides a space for the participants to get inspired by each other's work, experiences and best practices. To conduct the Exploration Lab we will provide the participants with materials and training provided in their ownlanguage, for that our team will provide a facilitator per country (Peru, Lebanon, Tanzania and the Netherlands) with native or near-native level of the language (Spanish, Arabic, Kiswahili and Dutch) so that participants can communicate in their own language andshare the learning with their communities and colleagues. Our team can also collaborate with an in-country facilitator if the programme has in-country staff available. The participants of the exploration lab will receive a package of tools to capture their own experiences – in their own ways and in their own time. These tools may include activities such as a Photo Collection, where users capture visual representations of their daily lives, or Diaries, where users record their daily activities and their perspectives on topics related to activism – in a codified or visual way, depending on the context.
