Albinism Umbrella (AU) was set up with the ultimate aim of having a joint voice for all persons with albinism (PWA) and albinism organization in Uganda. Albinism Umbrella (AU) was founded in 2014 at the pick of a national out carry for persons with albinism to have a collective voice in order to advocate their plight in Uganda as a solution to the then limiting factors of the existing albinism organizations. The vision bearer was driven by desire to have lasting impact on the persons with albinism. Theissue of contention among many organizations was either to be classified as a disability movement or not. AU was legally incorporated in February 2017 as a company limited by guaranty by its founding members Ms. Olive Namutebi and Ms.Phenamyra Nagujjawho were passionate about the wholistic person with albinism. Albinism Umbrella has grown from strength to strength in the past few years, as a young organization, moving it from a small vision of providing hope to people with albinism to regional outlook. When the organization started it sought to be relevant to the Ugandan community focusing on legislature changes. Now it has a more global perspective on issues of albinism and strives to be the number one authority on issues of albinism and the related challenges in Africa. Albinism Umbrella is unique in its advocacy strategy that engages all relevant players at national level for instance Parliament, ministerial and local government engagements. The ability and capacity to advocate, analyse and review legal policies.

General
#The Unknown About Albinism# project aims to profile and map households with Persons with Albinism (PAW) in Northern, Western and Central Uganda as a basis for advocacy and access to services. The project has the following specific objectives: # To create a comprehensive database for PWA in Northern, Western and Central Uganda through community-led data collection (collection through Albinism Umbrella#s national network of advocates and activists). # To promote the formation of support groups of PWA at grassroots levels as a basis for accessing health, education and other mainstream services. # To empower PWA with advocacy skills through the support groups to enable them lobby for their rights. # To influence national policy so as to enhance inclusion of PWA in mainstream development based on the data collected. Therefore, the project collaborates closely with Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, National Council for Disability and the Police. Furthermore, the project activities create a positive impact on the quality of life of PWAs in the country by improving their health (including limiting cases of skin cancer) and achievement of education in the mainstream. By doing so, the project increases visibility and recognition of albinism as a disabling conditionand the support structures created facilitate advocacy access to services across the country. Ultimately, the project empowers PWA by increasing their self-esteem and confidence and enhancing opportunities for them to participate effectively in mainstream development processes in the country.
