FEMNET
The African Women#s Development and Communications Network, (FEMNET) was found in 1988 following the UN Decade of Women process (1975-1985) with a vision to strengthen the role and contribution of African NGOs focus on women development, equity and humanrights and of the girl child. The institution is registered under the Non Governmental Organizations Coordination Act of 1990 as an International NGO with its headquarters in Nairobi Kenya. The network has been actively involved in sharing of information, experiences, ideas and strategies among African Women#s NGOs as a strategy for strengthening their capacity to effectively engage and participate in development processes from the national, regional, continental and with an eye on the global spaces upon realization that there is the need to keep women organizations connected and in communication, in facilitating and strategizing to undertake collective actionson matters of common interest in Africa especially that which are gender sensitive. The organization involves men in their strategies mainly on; lobby, advocacy, use of communication and information technology (ICT and social media) and capacity building in its effort to advancing gender justice and mainstreaming in the target constituencies. The partnership with OXFAM NOVIB and FEMNET has grown since September 2006, boasting of the organization#s growth into a Pan African Network visible and credible asserting influence at strategic regional and global arenas. It is a strong network having mobilized women and networked women within and without Africathat has brought together over and about 500 members spread in 43 African countries working on a common agenda to advance gender justice and sustainable development of the African woman in the continent. This project is a follow up to the previous grant for both institutional and programmatic contribution towards FEMNET#S execution of its strategic plan 2011-2013 that aimed to, #Ensure thatAfrican women organisations lobby groups, decision makers, like-minded organizations as well as men take action to create an environment that supports gender equality and social justice#. The organization facilitated member organizations and individuals to improve on their capacity on economic empowerment, policy and advocacy at the African Union, SADC, ECOWAS, EAC, UNECA by participating in the functions of these bodies as part of the larger CSOs in different forums. This was done through research, development of policy briefs and cross regional fora for women from different nations to demand for their rights at these critical levels. In Consolidating FEMNET institutional capacity, the 2014-2019 strategic plan seeks to respond to the past experience and in anticipation of the incoming environment. The Institutional capacity building proposal aims to facilitate and improve capacities on economic empowerment, policy and advocacy to better inform and contribute on the awareness of women rights advocacy tools so as to strengthen and build a strong African women#s rights movement that is actively and productively involved in engaging and influencing decision making process at all these levels. PAP considers FEMNET a strong institution as an imperative to the success of any program the organization undertakes. Moreover the success and track record that the organization has recorded in capacity building, development of leadership among young women, partnership with men, and current evidence and knowledge products, and the approach that interfaces community andnational level campaigns with global level processes through a regional platform is potential.

General
1.1 The African Women’s Development and Communication Network- FEMNET The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a pan-African, feminist and membership-based network based in Nairobi, Kenya with over 800 individual and institutional members across 50 African countries and in the diaspora. FEMNET envisions a society where African women and girls thrive in dignity andwell-being, free from patriarchal and neoliberal oppression and injustices. FEMNET recognizes that the commitmentto alter relationsof power, structural injustices, and systemic oppression lies at the heart of feminism. FEMNET is therefore committed to shing towards altering power structures that perpetuate gender inequality by nurturing the Africanwomen’s movement to enable women and girls intheir diversity to effectively claim, affirm, and use their collective power to end all forms of exclusion, oppression, exploitation, and injustices against them. Founded in 1988, FEMNET exists to facilitate and coordinate thesharing of experiences, information, and strategies for human rights promotion among feminists, activists, and women’srights organizations as a strategy for collective organizing; policy influencing <(>&<)> advocacy; strategic communication; capacity strengthening as well as feminist solidarity and movement building. 1.2. Climate Justice FEMNET is implementing the climate justice work under the Africa Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ)project in partnership with Oxfam NOVIB, Natural Justice, PACJA and the Africa Youth Commission. The project is based on thepremise that women, young people, and indigenous peoples are most exposed to climate hazards and less able to adapt and/or recover. They are least positioned to cope with the effects of climate change dueto their limited access to (natural and financial) resources, networks,decision-making power, and legal systems. They are also least likely to be compensated for climate impacts, having to bear the loss and struggle to rebuild their livelihoods and properties. The theme of the Feminist COP will be "Just Transition." This theme underscores the importance of inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive approaches to addressing climate change and its impacts. It highlights the need to ensure that the transition to a sustainable future leave no one behind, particularly women, girls, and marginalized communities. The theme will be able to link the various thematic dialogues such as Climate finance, debt, renewable energy, the extractive sector, Loss and damage, and adaptation In the face of urgent issues such as climate change, environmental deterioration, and economic disparities, it has become clear that a fair shift towards a sustainable future is not only imperative but also a chance to rectify long standinginjustices. Embracing a feminist perspective on the notion of a just transition acknowledges theinterconnectedness of environmental and social equity, emphasizing that gender equality must be a fundamental element of any transition plan. The FeministCOP seeks to: ● To provide a safe and empowering space for African feminists to voice their concerns, aspirations, and demands related to climate change and COP 28. ● To foster solidarity and collaboration among feminists, civil society organizations, and activists working towards climate justice in Africa. ● To facilitate a deeper understanding of the COP processes and negotiations, empowering participants to engage more effectively in climate advocacy. ● To document the experiences and stories of African women in the context of climate change and share these narratives with a global audience.
