Oxfam International was formed in 1995 by a group of independent non-governmental organizations. Their aim was to work together forgreater impact on the international stage to reduce poverty and injustice. The name "Oxfam" comes from the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, founded in Britain in 1942. The group campaigned for food supplies to be sent through an allied naval blockade to starving women and children in enemy-occupied Greece during the Second World War. As well as becoming a world leader in the delivery of emergency relief, Oxfam International implements long-term development programs in vulnerable communities. We are also part of a global movement, campaigning with others, for instance, to end unfair trade rules, demand better health and education services for all, and to combat climate change. Today, there are 19 member organizations of the Oxfam International confederation. They are based in: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Quebec, South Africa, Spain and the United States. The Oxfam International Secretariat is based in Oxford, UK. The Secretariat runs advocacy offices in Addis Ababa, Brussels, Geneva, New York and Washington DC.

General
Over the past 30 years, the gap between the rich and everyone else has worsened in many countries across the world. In 2017 the richest 1% received 82% of all new wealth, while the poorest 50% didn#t receive anything. The extreme gap between rich and poor is tearing us apart. It is damaging our economy and denying people, women and girls disproportionately, the chance of a life of dignity andopportunity. Most of all, inequality is crushing the fight against poverty. Working with alliances has been identified as one of the key strategies that will enable Oxfam to contribute building strong movements for a bolder and stronger voice against inequality and deepening our engagement with the public around the world. As the global elite is gathering at the World Economic Forum in Davos, from January 22 # 25 2019, we aim to support and amplify the different voices of people across the world that are uniting and organizing to challenge inequality and demand a fairer society. Within this framework, FEMNET is a key ally of the Pan Africa Program (PAP) and it#s contributing to reshape an African narrative around inequality. FEMNET is working with women and girls and youth across Africa and is supporting the plans below during the Davos Week of Action in January.
