General
In Vietnam, audiences# thoughts and behaviors towards sexist adverts can be basically divided into three group based on people#s reactions and comments on social media from 75 sexist adverts dated from 2016 # 2018, collected by Wequal team as bellow: ##Sharing as it is fun and interesting# # this group tend to support and share the ads. They may not be either purchasers or end-users yet helpto spread the products image in social media. # #I don#t care so I ignore it# # this group tend to be neutral and often do not interact with the ads. For some, human portrayals as well as gender roles in advertising are unrealistic and those ads are often considered annoying to them whenever they use social media, watch TV or search for online information. They don#t take advertisement as something that can have impact on their lives and communities and choose not to get involved either support or defense. # #Being awareof sexism in advertising# # this group takes up a small bit of social media participants, tends to disagree but act individually. Their voices can easily fade away on social media channels. Although these findings are preliminary and need to do further analysis, they prove a fact that sexism problems are real. Learning from the current situation, within the time frame of 8 months from August 2018 to March 2019, this project aims to minimize the amount of sexism content in Vietnamese advertising industry by (1) Set up a core and active group whose members act as advertising watchdog agents to raise the public#s awareness on sexist advertising, then ultimately influence advertisers, marketers and brands to reduce sexism content in their adverts and (2) building up an alliance with like-minded advertisers to collect diverse voices of insiders and better persuade more actors from the industry to join the movement combating sexism in advertising.
