Hoosem Women Farmers Multi-Purpose
The Hoomsen Women Farmers Co-operative Society is a co-operative society registered by two groups of women farmers- 'the Home#sun and the Na#antukurum' women farmers shepwan. They both started as an association of 20 women farmers membership each, located in a small farming village called Na#mess in Shepwan community of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State. The group saw the needto come together and support each other at individual and group level through communal farming activities sometimes for a fee or asa support to members as is culturally practiced .They are simply a group of women farming at a small scale to cater for the needs of their families. They mainly farm rice and other cash crops such as cowpea, beans, yams etc. These two groups of women farmers were later encouraged by and supported by a Non-Governmental Organization called Country Women Association of Nigeria (COWAN) between June - July, 2003, to merged since they have common interest, so as to have a more structured group; and they later got registered asa women farmers# Cooperative organization in July 2008 with the Nigerian Agricultural development bank in Shendam LGA. The Cooperative is currently made up of a total number of 40 fully registered members. As a registered cooperative group they cultivate jointly, harvest, store and later sell the harvest in the market and some of the proceed is ploughed into the Cooperative account to serve as loan to members during the lean farming season that is characterized with lack of food in some households. They also take these loans to buy farming inputs and meet up with basic family needs when they are hit by economic hardship. Currently, their major challenge is getting a large farm land for the use of their members. They have been getting land on loan from the men in the community because the tradition does not allow them as women, to own land. However, with their cooperative status, they can acquire land. This land acquisition is the focus of the grant that they arecurrently receiving from Voice.

General
The Home#sun and Na#antukurum women farmers shepwan as the name implies is an association of women farmers started as an association with 20 women farmers membership; each located in a small farming village called Na#mess in Shepwan community of ShendamLocal Government Area of Plateau State. The group started as any other organically form ed local farming groups that saw the need to come together and support each other at individual and group level through communal farming activities sometimes for a feeor as a support tomembers as is culturally practiced. Farming is their major occupation, but the challenge they face is lack of farm land. Under this project, they have come together as a corporative to source for farm land. The overall goal of the project is to strengthen the capacity of these women through the cooperative, to gain access to farmland, which they ordinarily could not achieve at individual level which prohibits women from owning a land. To achieve this goal, the project will focusonthe following objectives: a. To strengthen the cooperative and positioning it better to access funds and agricultural credit facilities b. To strengthen the advocacy and influencing capacity of members to be able to engage traditional strongholds thatwill pave way for them to access land c. To support the cooperative to secure farm land for the use of members of the cooperative.
