General
In Niger, in summary the project activies are defined as following : 1) Community involvement and dialogues : Assessment and dialogue with influential community leaders and service providers have been conducted regarding their perception on early marriage and girl education. 2) System Strengthening and Capacity building of duty bearers:In Niger a complaint committee and reporting mechanism have been established in all 5 villages which have helped prevent eight cases of early marriage to date. 3)Providing educational and vocational opportunities:training sessions were implemented with pedagogical training units in 5 schools to improve quality of education. 35 school administrators were trained on child rights, child protection, gender sensitivity, positive discipline, and roles andresponsibilities. This resulted in child protection action plans that are being implemented. 20 teachers in 5 schools have been trained in child protection, including child marriage. In each village, functional literacy centres have been established. 4)Expertise :In Niger, lessons learned from the Project LAHIA, aimed at promoting women's social and economic status through diversification of economic activities and access to savings and loans facilities., have been instrumental in undertaking interventions to combat childmarriage, including the provision of literacy training and bridge schooling to adolescents/children. 5)Networks :In Niger ON supports a network of 100 youth groups who advocate for child and youth rights. SC works with UNICEF to actively support 12 of the 35 governmental child protection agencies nationwide, a real strength in our work against child marriage. 6)In Niger ON and SC promote girl-friendly school environments. ON and SC engage with boys and men, husbands and fathers to promote their commitment towards preventing child marriage. Adolescents from poor families are particularly targeted. The project is aimed at addressing the issue of child marriages through multi-pronged strategies. Its planned outcomes are: Outcome 1: Young people are better informed about SRHR, including adverse effects of child marriage and empowered to voice their needs and rights Outcome 2: Increased access to formal educationfor girls at risk of and affected bychild marriage Outcome 3: Increased access to economic opportunities for girls at risk of and affected by child marriage, and their families Outcome 4: Increased access to child protection systems for girls at risk of and affected by child marriage Outcome 5: Increased utilization of SRHR services that are responsive to the needs of young people, particular girls at risk of-, and affected by child marriage Outcome 6: Increased engagement and collective social action against child marriage and in support of ASRHR Outcome 7: Supportive rights-based legal and policy environment against child marriage
