Target Groups
Our intermediary target group are the ‘direct key actors’ within our programme; being: the staff and leaders of our 11 local partners. This is estimated at around 168,500 (baseline 2016) – of which 39% Women, and 23% Youth. Our final beneficiaries are the members of the MBOs within our programme: organized family farmers (FF) and small-scale entrepreneurs (SSE). Outreach baseline: 2.021.924 (district + national level) - of which 40% Women and 25% Youth.
General
This programme makes a difference in the lives of 168500 Ugandan family farmers (70%) and small scale entrepreneurs (30%) in the period 2017-2021; all members of a well selected and mixed group of 10 member-based organizations (5 for family farmers, 2 for small scale entrepreneurs and 3 microfinance of which 3 are national organisations) which are supported by the Trias DGD-funded programme. Hofokam a non MBO microcredit institution has been added to the partner portfolio given its role in the programme which makes a total of 11 local partners. Through this programme, Trias and its’ partners aim to overcome the main barrier to social and economic development of these farmers and entrepreneurs, being: the lack of specific support like research, capacity building, extensions services; lack of sustainable or reliable markets and finance; inconsistent policy regimes and non-functional institutions; climate change; and poor organisation for collective action. This leads to limited production-, management-, financial- and marketing skills – and hence to time-intensive agricultural production, low productivity, poor quality, low added value, high costs, and unstainable use of natural resources. This programme will try to address the above mentioned challenges through the strengthening of the capacities of 10 MBOs (through tailor-made and participatory training and coaching) – for them to become more inclusive, result oriented and sustainable: to provide better quality services to their members; to enhance their business, social and natural environment; to socially and economically empower them, and to represent them with a strong voice in Ugandan society. The programme will build on interlinkages between organisations of family farmers, small scale entrepreneurs, and microfinance as well as interlinkages between sub national and national levels for networking and collective action. Note: The programme aligns with the choices made in the Uganda Joint Strategic Framework and takes the outcomes of the Strategic Dialogue into account and it incorporates synergy and complementarity with other (Belgian) NGA’s and the Belgian Technical Cooperation to efficiently and effectively contribute to the achievement of the results of the programme.

For two MBOs, Nyaruvur SACCO and ZODFA, the AG for 2019 has been delayed to March 2020 and then cancelled because of the Corona measures. This negatively affects the result of 2019 for this indicator, as both MBOs list a negative progress for this indicator due to these unforeseen circumstances.
